A Word Of Caution

When looking for services we generally first ask those that we trust such as friends, family, colleagues who have undertaken similar activities combined with searches, quotations etc.  It is unlikely that you will take up the offer of having a new drive laid via the flyer through your letter box so why would you choose a Party Wall Surveyor in this way.

Unfortunately there is a practice in this industry that whilst you are waiting for your Planning Permission, companies that monitor the planning websites are writing to your neighbours advising them of your proposed works and offering their services. The majority of the companies will be simply advertising their business as most people would not know who or what a Party Wall Surveyor is unless they have gone through the process before.

There are however certain companies that word their letters in such a way that do not provide all the information and unnecessarily worrying the neighbour that their property is at risk.  As you will be paying for the Surveyor's fee why wouldn't your neighbour sign up for this free Survey. Again most people read these letters for what they are, however some owners who may be elderly of uninformed do sign up with these firms.

Our advice on all projects is to discuss your project with your neighbour before you put in for planning, even if you drop them a note you could be saving yourself at least one set of professional fees. Advise them that they will receive unsolicited letters through the post and to ignore them until either you send them formal notice or your nominated company sends notice through.

Christopher Anthony Surveyors are members of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors who have strict guidelines on such letters and is detailed in the Code of Conduct.
